With all that had happened, Belex was still encumbered by the distress of not truly knowing who he was. He wondered if cinescape technicians had made a great technological leap. He considered that a possibility, especially given the extreme drama of the events surrounding him, the beauty of this creature Aurilena, and the way she carved his heart like an artist etching a masterpiece that seemed scripted for tragedy.

Was he in a cinescape right now? With the entirety of The Homeland watching? Was Aurilena the lead actress? What was he supposed to do? He only felt emotions toward her, not toward an audience he couldn’t interact with. He didn’t know his audience, only Aurilena, an actress of a most peculiar sort, if that’s what she was.

She woke him from his contemplations by saying, “I have another planet in mind we can try. It’s called Vista.” She was recalling a place her brother had told her about, and she was hoping she could get there by remembering the name.

He nodded, which she took for approval, so she worked what memories she could find about her brother’s recollections into her thoughts. She had only known the place to be the climatic opposite of Aldeberon. Her brother had described it as a place with cold, howling winds, but that would be good enough to help rescue them from all this awkward tension.

When she shut her eyes and thought about her brother, Aurilena and Belex found themselves on a warm, red planet. She didn’t think it was Vista. Thinking about her brother must have brought her to this place, a place he saw but never told her about.

“Lots of trees, funny color though,” he said. The sky was a beautiful red hue.

Dark, almost black trees bent toward the sky from their origin in the soil and rose thousands of feet into the reddish air. Each tree arched into another, and it seemed to Belex they could all be lovers. Even the leaves, which were long, flat spears, were black.

“I think they’re lovely,” she said.

“How did you get us here? Did you remember the location?”

“No. My brother was here. I guess it was enough for me to just think about his travels. Like I said, I’m new at this, but it’s getting easier. Okay, well, anyway,” she continued, excited and happy to tell the handsome Gath something he didn’t know, “Vista is in a star system with six other planets that look a lot like ours. Isn’t that crazy?” She didn’t mention that she didn’t think this was Vista. She didn’t want to spoil her victory.

“I guess so.”

“So of course, I don’t know where on the planet to go. I don’t have any information about it so I can’t go to a specific place.”

“Like a city?”

She nodded enthusiastically. “If it has cities. We’ve never seen any other civilizations, and my brother, he went to a lot of places. I think it was a little hobby of his to look for civilized life on other planets, but he didn’t find any.
